Barnstable traveled to the edge of the island Monday night and headed back down cape with a massive win 4-2 win vs. Sandwich under their belt.

Max Clark led the way for the Red Hawks with two goals. Braden McCarthy also added a goal and Andrew Harmon iced the game with an empty netter in the final minutes. Goalie Bob Doherty was a rock in net, coming up with some massive saves, especially as the Blue Knights fought to tie it late.

The game was largely even, with both teams seeing a multitude of scoring chances and solid goaltending.

Barnstable came out flying early on. Less than two minutes into the game, Clark sped down the right side and rifled one into the back of the net.

The Blue Knights responded just a few minutes later on a highlight reel goal from Declan Cochrane. Cochrane powered to the net with a Barnstable defender draped all over him, then sharply moved the puck to his backhand before beating a sprawled out Doherty. The elite goal was punctuated with an electrifying celebration that got the Sandwich crowd going.

Fortunately for Barnstable, there’s no such thing as style points, and that was evident on Clark’s second goal of the game. In a play that originated from below the goal line, Clark had a puck ricochet off himself and into the back of the net. The gritty goal put the Red Hawks up 2-1 midway through the first period.

Once again, Sandwich responded, this time on the power play. From the right faceoff dot, Nick Buckland roofed a shot short side over the shoulder of Doherty. It was a 2-2 game heading into the third.

At 2:55 of the third, Braden McCarthy put the Red Hawks up for good, speeding down the ice and wristing a shot past Sandwich netminder Nate Delman. Despite the loss, Delman came up massive for the Blue Knights time and time again with key saves in big moments.

Barnstable iced the game with an Andrew Harmon empty netter. This came after a mad scramble in front of the net that culminated with Bob Doherty lounging out and batting the puck out of harm’s way. Harmon retrieved the puck and whipped a shot the length of the ice and into the back of the net.

And that was that- Barnstable skated away with a huge 4-2 victory. They will take on Plymouth North at home Wednesday. Sandwich stays at Gallo to take on the Vineyard on the same night.
