Twin telepathy. Brotherly Bond. Family Familiarity. Call it whatever you want, but Finn and Braden Shortt were both on fire in St. John Paul II’s 5-2 win over Dennis-Yarmouth Wednesday night in Hyannis. They led the way with three points apiece, with Braden notching a goal and two assists and Finn potting two goals and adding an assist of his own. The strong offensive output from the Lions was backed up by an outstanding performance from senior goaltender Kelin MacAleese.
It was the Dolphins that opened the scoring late in the first period on the power play. Elijah Naoom won a battle behind the net and laid out a perfect pass to Luke Contonio, who one-timed it past MacAleese. It was a well-executed play that had DY up 1-0 and carrying all the momentum heading into the first intermission.
But that was short-lived, as a second period burst from the Lions had DY hanging on for dear life. Sean Monaghan got John Paul II on the board first less than three minutes into the second frame. Just over a minute later, Finn capitalized on an assist from his brother, ripping a shot from the top of the left circle past DY goalie Isaiah Stacey. Shortly after, he added his second goal with a five-hole snipe from the high slot area to make it 3-1. The family scoring barrage continued when Braden showed off his dangle skills and potted a dazzling goal. In the blink of an eye, the Lions had gone from down one to up three.
Chris Heywood added the cherry on top in the third. On a charge to the net, Heywood received a beautiful saucer pass from Braden Shortt. He quickly moved the puck to his forehand and scored in front of a sprawled out Dolphin defender.
DY junior Matt Garbitt added a shorthanded breakaway goal in the third that cut into the John Paul II lead, but the damage was done. A dominant 5-2 win over the Dolphins was in the books for John Paull II. They will stay at home to take on a struggling Upper Cape Tech squad on Saturday. DY heads up Cape to take on Bourne.
